Miley Cyrus is planning to auction several items from her personal closet on eBay and donate the proceeds to charity.

The 17-year-old superstar has been the subject of some media criticism for her choice of outfits that sometimes seem age-inappropriate and risque. In 2008, she posed nude with a bedsheet for the cover of Vanity Fair in a photoshoot directed by the famed Annie Liebowitz – a move that put both women under media fire. But regardless of past criticism, now Cyrus is choosing to use her fashion choices for a good cause.

The starlet is auctioning off some her racier and more expensive ensembles – including a $250,000 corset, mesh leotards and skimpy sundresses – on eBay to raise money for Get Ur Good On, a charity that connects teenagers and young adults with volunteer opportunities in their communities.

"I get this amazing blessing and opportunity to do this every day and get up on stage and hopefully inspire people with my music," said Cyrus in a video posted to the auction site. "And that’s something that’s really important to me, but so is getting involved in charities."

The auction is scheduled to kick off later this month, and is part of Cyrus’ involvement with Youth Service America. The nonprofit, founded in 1986 in Washington, D.C., is committed to helping children and young adults aged five to 25 find meaningful and substantial volunteer roles in their hometowns and local areas. Today, the organization reports, young adults volunteer in greater numbers than in any previous generation.

"It’s not about how much or how far, it’s about looking at your neighbours and seeing how you can help," Cyrus added. "This isn’t just stuff that’s all over the world, it’s right here, it’s right next to you. It’s important to get involved."
