Donations to Haitian disaster relief come in many forms

Article By Joe Meloni On February - 9 - 2010

As corporations and wealthy people make headlines for sizable donations to the Haitian disaster relief fund, regular United States citizens have developed a few interesting methods to raise as much money as they can for the nation.

In Tallahassee, Florida, and Greenwich, Connecticut, two hair salons have arranged Haircuts for Haiti drives later this month to raise as much money as they can.

Becker Salon in Greenwich will cut hair in exchange for a $50 donation on both Sunday, February 14 and one week later on the 21st, according to The Greenwich Post. The money the salon raises will be donated to the local chapter of the American Red Cross. Patrons can also purchase gift certificates to the salon for $50 with all proceeds going directly to the American Red Cross.

"We appreciate the generosity of Becker Salon," said Joan Irish, chief executive officer of the American Red Cross Greenwich Chapter. "This is a great example of a Greenwich-based business pitching in to support our monumental task of helping Haiti."

In Tallahassee, the Envy Salon and Spa will hold a similar drive on Monday, February 15 by appointment only. Those who cannot make appointments can donate through the store. Like the effort in Greenwich, all proceeds will go to the local chapter of the American Red Cross.

"I can’t even imagine what these people are going through," owner Tracy Young told WCTV-TV, the Tallahassee-based CBS affiliate. "So the least we can do is donate services, and time and money to these people."

Several hair salons have done similar drives throughout the country. The Orange County Register in California reported that the Taylor Hill Salon in San Juan, California, did the same on January 25.
