CEMEX announced on November 15th the completion of the EURUS wind farm, which will generate 250 megawatts. This power plant will be able to 25% of the Cemex’s plant power needs, as well as help CEMEX cut its CO2 emissions by 600,000 tons, in accordance with CEMEX air quality standards. (The Daily Tell cited the EURUS plant in the article “Cemex helps reduce carbon footprint with wind farm”).

The EURUS wind farm is located in Juchitan, in the Southern Mexican State of Oaxaca in a 2,500 hectare area in the Tehuantepec Isthmus. The wind farm generated 850 direct jobs in the area during construction.

Luis Farias, Vice-president of Energy and Climate Change at CEMEX called the plant “the largest wind power generation project in Latin America.” According to CEMEX, the wind farm generates enough electricity to supply the equivalent of a 500,000-person city.

The EURUS wind farm will be one of the largest wind farms in the world and the second largest in terms of emissions reduction under the Clean Development Mechanism of the United Nations (a major component of the Kyoto Protocol). It’s good to see CEMEX air quality priorities have translated into real action.

The EURUS wind farm is just one of many other wind projects that will form Mexico’s renewable energy energy grid. Enel and Enerthi are collaborating on a series of wind power projects in Baja California, Zacatecas and Oaxaca. These wind farms are projected to generate between 60 to 200 megawatts each.
