Bacardi Canada has decided to reduce their carbon footprint and reduce waste by converting from glass bottles to polyethylene terephthalate (PET) plastic bottles for its line of carbonated Bacardi Breezer products.
The rum company, which had used glass bottles for all of its products since 1988, decided to transfer to PET bottles to address a shift in consumer desire for more environmentally friendly packaging in their products.
"Our customers prefer PET for this type of ready to drink (RTD) beverage. It is more consumer friendly," says Dale Harrison, the materials sourcing manager for Bacardi Canada, Inc. "We like it because it’s lighter than glass and it is ideal for many outdoor venues where Breezer is consumed."
"Some of our competitors in this RTD category have been in PET, but we are the first major Canadian brand to convert our entire line," he added.
In switching to plastic bottling – which will maintain the glass bottles’ traditional "champagne bottle" shape and style – the Bacardi Breezer will lead to a 22 percent reduction in the company’s carbon footprint that could grow further in time with further shifts in production, according to David Clark of Amcor, the producers of the PET bottles.
The eco-friendly shift for the Bacardi environment with its products has already drawn positive reactions from both consumers and agencies in Canada, such as the Liquor Control Board of Ontario (LCBO) that complimented Bacardi’s focus on improving the environment with their packaging.
“We are pleased to see more alternative packaging like the Breezer PET containers,” said Chris Layton, LCBO Media Relations coordinator. “We encourage more companies to follow Bacardi Canada’s example.”
Additionally, studies from the LCBO indicated that the PET containers reduced waste by more than 90 percent.
